About this deal

Half-hidden by forest and overshadowed by threatening peaks, Le Sommet has always been a sinister place. Isaac’s fiancée, Laure Strehl, works at Le Sommet, a hotel in the Swiss Alps that was built on the site of an old sanatorium where tuberculosis patients were once treated. Her eagerly anticipated second thriller, The Retreat, published in July 2022 and became an instant Sunday Times and New York Times bestseller.

Book Review: THE SANATORIUM by Sarah Pearse - Crime by the Book Book Review: THE SANATORIUM by Sarah Pearse - Crime by the Book

What begins as a slow-burning suspense story gradually builds to a thriller that will have you up all night turning its pages. Sarah Pearse won readers' hearts with The Sanatorium, and The Retreat is every bit as transporting, with another unforgettable setting and a complex web of secrets. The resignation, detachment from reality, suppressed frustration or even despair at the absurd and illogical nature of medical bureaucracy (and sometimes medical professionals themselves): all these emotions are so real and so tied in with the experience of chronic illness, and she handles them beautifully.

The Retreat – By Sarah Pearse – Order Now

Almost as if women telling their stories of pain and disability in this format isn't real enough for those categories.Solidly enjoyable , a refreshing and original approach to personal memoir, particularly of illness and disability, and deservedly shortlisted for the fabulous Barbellion Prize. Was super excited to read as I saw a rave review from Reese ( this is a book club book and hers are usually great). She texts Isaac, asking him to come rescue her from the archive room, and when he does, she tells him that Lucas is the killer.

The Sanatorium - Penguin Books UK

She’s traumatised by not just the death of her little brother when they were kids but also a recent attempt on her own life. Strip away the many (and oh, there are many) plot lines and supporting characters, and this is the set-up for a new hero to step forward in the thriller world’s never-ending battle against puzzle-loving serial killers. Luckily for me, I had the perfect book for the job waiting on my to-read pile: Catherine Steadman’s brand-new release, THE FAMILY GAME.The past doesn't stay buried for long, at sea or on land, and what comes to the surface is both shocking and chilling. If you’ve been around Crime by the Book for a little bit, you already know how much I absolutely love Iceland Noir: a crime fiction festival that takes place in Reykjavik, Iceland in November. The American’s overbearing influence across the modern thriller genre emerges again in Pearse’s novel.
